Villa Sandi 'Il Fresco' Spumante Prosecco NV

Cheap, refreshing, and a little yeasty. It has nice bubbles. Would be good in a Mimosa.

To celebrate Cinco de Mayo a couple of days early with Chicken Fajitas, for tonight's wine review I opened this delightful Prosecco sparkling wine from Italy. This bubbly is a General List wine at the LCBO and widely available across Ontario.

Villa Sandi is located within the commune of Crocetta del Montello in the Province of Treviso in the Italian region of Veneto in a Palladian-style mansion that dates back to 1622. The building is protected by the hills of the Marca Trevigiana and rises out of a fertile countryside that pays homage to the local history. Moreover, it is situated between the areas of DOCG Valdobbiadene Prosecco and the DOC areas of Montello and Piave.

The Moretti Polegato family is the owner of Villa Sandi and they have been devoted to wine culture for many generations. Being one of Italy's leading Prosecco Estates, the family has contributed to the region's reputation for producing high quality sparkling wine. Today, Giancarlo Moretti Polegato proudly carries on the family tradition with his fondness and knowledge of the wine world, along with having great respect for the environment with a strong commitment to sustainability.

This particular Prosecco is made with 100% Glera grapes grown in DOC Treviso, the heart of Prosecco, in Northeastern Italy. Treviso is comprised of 95 municipalities, and the character of the soil here is influenced by the Piave river and contains a lot of pebbles, stones, sand and some clay. It was vinified by softly pressing whole grapes, then fermenting in temperature controlled tanks using selected yeast cultures. Fermentation is stopped by refrigeration once the required alcohol and sugar content levels are achieved. After spending two months on lees, the sparkling wine is ready for bottling.

Tasting Note:

VILLA SANDI PROSECCO IL FRESCO - DOC Treviso, Veneto, Italy (#394387) (D) - $15.95
100% Glera crafted using the Charmat method, this Prosecco has fresh, delicate aromas of lemon citrus, grapefruit, white peach, pear, and even some mineral notes. It has very good mouthfeel on the medium-full bodied palate with fine, balanced mousse. There's a kiss of sweetness that is balanced by crisp, fresh acidity. Lovely lemon citrus flavours notes give way to grapefruit, white peach, melon, and mineral notes. Very good length on the minerally, dry finish. Recommended buy. Score: 88+ pts

Villa Sandi

Owned and run by Giancarlo Moretti Polegato and his family, the Villa Sandi estate lies in the heart of the 1068 hectares of the Cartizze area, between the hamlets of Santo Stefano and San Pietro di Barbozza, in the municipality of Valdobbiadene. A sparkling jewel protected by the hills of the Marca Trevigiana, Villa Sandi is a Palladian style masterpiece dating back to 1622, and it is also the main office of the company. The Villa rises from a fertile countryside in which fields and farms, nowadays as well as in the past, pay homage to the local history. The diverse soils of this area of Italy enable Villa Sandi to produce a wonderful array of Proseccos and high quality still red and white wines.

Tasting Notes

An intensely fruity aroma with hints of ripe golden apple and a flowery note reminiscent of acacia flowers. The palate is fresh and soft to the palate with pear and apple notes and an agreeably fruity and harmonious finish.

Food Matches

Perfect aperitif but also great with canapes or panettone.

Vinification

Villa Sandi pride themselves on gorwing some of the best Glera grapes used for Prosecco - they are picked by a combination of machine and hand depending on the vineyard, and the grapes taken to their state of the art winery where the grapes are pressed, and the juice transferred into tanks for the first fermentation in steel temperature controlled conditions. The first ferment produces a naturally fruity yet crisp light wine, which is then transferred under pressure into a second tank where the wine is inocculated with yeast and sugar to start a secondary alcoholic fermentation - after which the now sparkling yet cloudy wine is transferred under pressure into a third tank for filtering and clarification, before transfer to another holding area ready for batch bottling. This is the unique 'Charmat,' or Tank method - where the wine is transferred through a series of stages, each designed to produce a top quality sparkling wine.
